As a class of surfactant, anionic surfactants have negatively charged heads in solution. They are the most widely used type of surfactant for laundering, dishwashing liquids and shampoos because of their excellent cleaning properties and high subduing potential. These surfactants are particularly good at keeping dirt away from fabrics and removing fabric softener residues. The most commonly used anionic surfactants are alkylbenzene sulfonates and alkyl ether sulfates.
